Step 2.1
Responsible sourcing
Once we've established the animal protection standards and defined the desired product qualities, we begin reaching out to family-owned farms in Sweden. It's important to note that all the leather we use is a by-product of the meat industry.
Our exclusive collaboration with these farms, known for their unwavering commitment to animal protection and welfare, allows us to achieve 100% traceability for all leather used in our goods. Our partner farms range in size, with the largest housing up to 250 animals and the smallest, approximately 20. We specifically work with leathers sourced from bovines aged 24 months and older.
Designing for animal protection: The three elements
To establish leather goods traceability, we needed to redefine and deconstruct how the fashion industry approached new designs. We broke it down into its core elements and then rebuilt it from the ground up, both from a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top perspective. Our conclusion was that to achieve leather goods traceability with a focus on animal protection, three realms must be considered. These three realms are as follows: design evolution, supply chain and sourcing, and product IDs. Their purpose? To safeguard animal protection, tracing the journey from the initial strokes of a new design to the moment our clients hold a finished product, all supported by a traceable supply chain and digital ID.
Step 1.1
Setting design parameters
The process of designing leather goods traceability begins with two key components.
First, we create a sketch supported by a technical specification that details the technical and production aspects of the design.
Second, we introduce our secret ingredient: an animal protection specification that is intricately linked to the technical specifications. This specification determines the construction of the product in a reverse-engineered setup. This ensures the highest possible quality from an animal protection perspective while also making it easy to support future repairs.
Step 1.2
Redefining-quality
Step two involves a reverse-engineering process that prioritizes quality while ensuring animal protection. Our motivation is to reshape the fashion industry's connection with nature and natural ecosystems. We make a deliberate choice to focus on the desired feeling and quality of the end product before we even begin sourcing leather from farms.
When we select leather, we don't rely on the traditional quality grading system of A-C or 1-3, which primarily assesses leather quality. Instead, our criterion is the quality of animal protection at the farm and during transportation.
All leathers are vegetable tanned, to respect our planet and our strive towards circularity.
Why leather traceability matters: The Numbers
14,5%
of global GreenHouseGas Emissions comes from factory farming.
750 M
farms globally. Data shows that small family-owned farms go out of business and are replaced with factory farming.
55%
of global antibiotics are given to animals in factory farming.
Traceable leather commitment
At Josefin Liljeqvist, we are committed to highlighting the importance of animal protection, especially in products derived from animals. This commitment drives us to ensure traceability in our leather goods, from the farm to the exact details of the product.
All our leathers are byproducts of the meat industry, and we pay extra for traceability throughout the value chain, promoting better compensation for farmers dedicated to animal protection. Our leather is sourced exclusively from small, family-owned farms in Sweden.
We advocate for conscious consumption, encouraging reduced leather and meat use for a healthier planet. Each of our leather goods features a unique, traceable digital ID designed to provide transparency, build trust, and connect you with the origin of our products.
Step 2.2
Artisanal production
After finalizing the technical and animal protection specifications and acquiring the required leathers, our skilled artisans commence production. Products are crafted either entirely by hand or through a combination of handmade and non-handmade processes.
Each leather and product receives a unique ID. The product's ID, the RSID, tracks every step of the artisanal journey, and the leather ID is added to this product ID as it progresses through production. At the end of the artisanal process, each product bears a unique ID that carries information about both the production and the specific leathers used. This ID allows for individual traceability all the way back to the farms
Step 3.1
Digital ID for traceability
Every design is assigned a distinct digital ID known as the RSID (Responsible Systems IDentification), generated by our proprietary software, Responsible Systems. This 6-character ID is prominently placed on the exterior of each design and encodes essential information about the product, client, animal protection, material usage, and supply chain. To access this information, simply active the ID upon delivery in your account with us.
Step 3.2
Activate ID for traceability
Upon delivery of your unique leather product, you activate the RSiD in your account, in the membership area by pressing "activate" under your RSiD design. Upon activating the RSiD, it links to a reverse supply chain network allowing data transparency to the B2C client. This is valid via Responsible Systems Supply chain partners such as farms, artisans, tanneries, slaughterhouses and more.
